I would be tempting the fate of a twisted ankle just by walking across the room!

1 Thessalonians 4:1-18

Reference: v.7 For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life. (TNIV Bible)

Explore: As a teenager, I hated cleaning my room.  I would go for weeks and weeks with the good intention of cleaning up my mess, but would struggle to find the motivation to start clearing up.  I would finally get to the point where I lost sight of the carpet on the floor, and would need to start putting things away just to get to my bed at night! I would then have to endure hours and hours of cleaning, as the mess had become so bad that it would take me a whole day just to get it back to normal.  This was such a horrible job and I knew that all I needed to do to stop it happening again, was to put my things away once I had finished with them.  However, a few weeks down the track, my clothes and items would start making their way back onto my floor, and I would be back to tempting the fate of a twisted ankle just by walking across the room!  If I had not been so complacent, and taken one or two minutes each day, then I would not have had such a huge mess to clean up.  However, my laziness always seemed to win out over my desire for neatness.

Application:  When Paul was talking to the new followers of Christ, he forewarned them about persecution and trials that would come their way.  The persecution at the time was very serious for them, just as it is serious still in some countries of our world.  What I find, however, is that the greatest challenge to faith in my culture is not from others, but from the complacency within ourselves.  There are many believers who don’t take the time to read the Bible, they don’t prioritise spending time in worship, and they only rely on God when times get tough.  It seems like the easier option to just do what we want now, and suffer the consequences later.  However, that is not the best life that God has in store for us.  If we are diligent now, in the everyday, then we do not have so far to come to connect with God.

Prayer: Father God, often it is clear what is best for us, but it doesn’t always make it the easiest decision.  Help us to be diligent in how we live for you so that our lives are clean to do your work. Amen.

How messy have you allowed your life to get lately?
