You know it’s not going to be a good assignment when you have been doing copious amounts of reading and you still feel none the wiser!

Ecclesiastes 12:1-14

Reference: v.13 Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the duty of every human being. (TNIV Bible)

Explore: I’m not the smartest person in the world, and big words can often flummox me.  I can remember at uni reading through copious amounts of notes, journals and text books and not really taking anything in.  You know it’s not going to be a good assignment when you have been doing research for over an hour, read pages and pages of notes, and you still feel none the wiser! But then, as you persevere, you finally discover one paper that explains things simply and effectively.  You may not be getting the depths of the research, but at least now you understand the subject!

Application: I feel a little this way after reading through Ecclesiastes.  It is such an in-depth book, and seems to be drawing a lot of analogies from the time it was written.  And yet we get to the final two verses and it all seems to make sense: through all time, in all situations, and with all wisdom… fear God and keep his commands.  It’s as simple and as challenging as that! Although this book was written many years beforehand, I feel this is the essence of Jesus’ message as well.  And every human being has the ability to do this.  You don’t have to be the smartest, the wisest, the most beautiful, or most popular… no matter who you are, fear God and follow his commands.

Prayer: Lord, following you is not always the easiest path, but it is the one with the most hope and purpose.  May we stay focused upon You and your commands. Amen.

How are you going at fearing God and keeping his commands?
